"Like metal in a forge, you emerge from this experience changed—but stronger."
Introduction: The Fire That Transforms
I heard the words, “It will be okay,” but I didn’t believe them. Not because of what was said—but because of how it was said.
The voices of my loved ones were steady, but their faces told a different story. I saw fear, uncertainty, and sadness in their eyes—not because they had given up on me, but because cancer forces you to confront something most people spend their whole lives avoiding: the reality of death.
When you hear the word cancer, you hear death. No one says it out loud, but the thought is immediate, unshakable, deafening. It’s a perspective that isn’t easy to change, because until you walk this path yourself, you can’t understand how terrifying it is. My loved ones weren’t preparing for me to die—but I know that, deep down, they thought I would. And in the beginning, so did I.
I was lost. I had nothing to aspire to, nothing to hold onto. I didn’t know anyone with breast cancer, and I thought it meant one thing: I was going to die.
Even while looking at my three children, I lived as if I was waiting to die. It wasn’t just sadness—I felt paralyzed by fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of suffering, fear of leaving my children without a mother. Hope felt like something meant for other people—people who had a chance, people whose lives weren’t already decided by the hands of fate.
And yet, something inside me kept whispering—there had to be more.
I didn’t wake up one day and suddenly decide to be strong. It happened in small moments—through tears, through exhaustion, through confronting my deepest fears. Over time, I challenged what I thought was meant for me in my diagnosis. And finally, I did something about it.
Through this journey, I found myself. I came to know the power of self-esteem, the power we give and receive from others, and the strength that exists in between.
I stopped living as if cancer had already won and started reclaiming what was mine—my power, my identity, my future.
And from that place, I created My Sister’s Keeper Cleveland.
No woman should feel the way I felt—alone, hopeless, lost, and scared. That darkness should never be walked alone. So, I built a light. A space where women could find sisterhood, support, and strength in a journey that tries to strip it away.
It was hard to understand those feelings while I was in the fire, but looking back, I see it now. I can appreciate the journey. I can finally put into words what I couldn’t before, and in doing so, I can give voice, understanding, and hope to others.
Reflection Prompt:
Before moving forward, take a moment to reflect:
What was your first thought when you heard your diagnosis?
Did you see cancer as something you had to fight, or did you feel like it had already won?
How do you feel about that mindset now?
Cancer is more than a diagnosis. It reshapes you, challenges you, and forces you to see life through a different lens. But after the treatments, the surgeries, and the endless appointments—what comes next?
